Recent Basement Renovation in Ottawa
A Little Something for Everyone
“A little something for everyone” was the directive for the design of this basement renovation. The homeowners wanted to add a full new livable level to their two-storey home, that would allow ample opportunity for their whole immediate and extended family to enjoy for years to come.
The once untapped potential of this unfinished basement, which was primarily used for storage and by the family’s two cats, has now been fully realized as a multi-functional and stunning entertainment and living space.
The existing unique features of this basement provided a great jumping off point for the overall design. The soaring 9’ ceilings, oversized windows and extra wide staircase, were factored into the layout of the floorplan and helped to define the best location of each room.
A three-piece bathroom was added as the first room off the new hallway from the staircase. Across from it sits the bonus room, currently used as a playroom for youngsters but intended to eventually become a bedroom for out-of-town family members. The desire of a fitness area that felt connected to the main family room space, but not directly apart of it was of this, such as the board and batten in the playroom/ bedroom and the geometric trim detail on the tv wall in the fitness room.
The overall colour palette of rich warm wood tones, deep blues and greys, matte black hardware, plumbing and lighting fixtures, paired with a pop of champagne bronze and contrasted with warm white tiles and quartz, all create a complex, yet cohesive overall aesthetic that is sure to offer a little something for everyone.
