Kitchen Islands, a huge piece in a Kitchen Renovation
A kitchen island is often the focal piece in the most important part of the home. It serves several purposes, whether it’s extra prep space, a desk for students, or a catch-all, it is important to design your new kitchen island with these basics in mind!
- Size Matters: For the most functional use of space for your island ensure you’re following the proper clearances for things like seating, circulation, and storage space.
Maintaining a minimum of 36” (915mm) between your kitchen island and your perimeter cabinetry or walls is a must. If possible, having 42” – 48” of clearance will be much more comfortable and allow for more circulation space, especially if there is island seating.
- Maximize your Storage: There are plenty of ways to incorporate storage within a kitchen island. Drawers are recommended for ease of access, especially those who have limited mobility. If you’re not sold on the look of drawers, having a set of doors with pull-outs will achieve the same level of function with a different look.If you have items to display, there are some creative ways to incorporate open shelving into your island design as well.
- Adding Appliances: This can be a great way to achieve peak functionality, especially in smaller spaces. The most common options for island appliances are microwaves and dishwashers. You could also incorporate a cooktop or your kitchen sink!
- Seating: Whether you use it as a formal dining table or a place for a quick meal, adding seating to your island is super beneficial! This can save you some space if your kitchen is on the smaller side and it can also be great for entertaining.
- Electrical Considerations: You can’t forget some outlets! Depending on the size of your island, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) requires at least one access to an outlet. This will provide power for small appliances or cell phones conveniently.
Always be sure to place outlets strategically and match it to the finish of your cabinets to keep it hidden!
- Choosing your Materials: Popular kitchen island materials include quartz and wood.
Accent colours can also be a great choice. For islands that complement the existing kitchen design, consider a striking accent feature such as a curved waterfall countertop or undercounter lighting. - Make a Statement: An island is a great opportunity to add some personality and depth to your space. Bold colours, unique shapes, or featured lighting can really make the space your own and create a beautiful focal point!
Designing the perfect kitchen island involves considering size, storage, appliances, seating, electrical needs, materials, and personal style. By paying attention to these details, you can create a functional and beautiful centerpiece for your kitchen that enhances both its utility and aesthetic appeal. A well-designed kitchen island can truly transform your kitchen space and become a cherished part of your home.
