Mid-Century Modern’s Bestseller
This library is a stunningly unique piece in this home of a history professor. It is based on the Mid-Century modern movement that continues to encompass many present day designs. The homeowners were looking for something to store their collection of novels, while remaining true to their love for this era of design.
THE CONCEPT
For a history professor and a remote worker, the homeowners needed an upgraded home office, as well as functional storage for a collection of approximately 1,000 books.
THE PLAN
So much shelving and it is all adjustable to provide flexibility with storage and display options.
THE BEFORE
So much untapped potential in this expansive second floor bonus space. This area is the first thing you see as you arrive at the top of the stairs and is a shared space between all of the families bedrooms.
IN THE DETAILS
A built-in desk with a wraparound window seat, lends a proper workspace to work virtually and to research comfortably. Beautiful medium-tone wood drawers were used for filing storage. Push-latch upper cabinetry, surrounding the perimeter of the shelving, is used for larger books and additional storage items that do not need to be displayed.
THE DESIGN
Pops of colour and wood paneling is present in the walls and shelving to pay homage to its inspirations and provide a distinct look overall. Neutral tones were used to create unity within the space and emphasize the saturated colours.
OUR NICHE
Track lighting is used to draw the eye towards the novels on display. Under-cabinet lighting is used to provide task lighting in the small opening to have a space to keep an open book, and above the desk opening.
THE FINALE
Each of these elements come together to create a successfully constructed tribute to the Mid-Century Modern design movement, which provides diversity and function to this home.
