The Power of Powder Rooms; Yes, they are Design Worthy!

Often powder rooms don’t get the credit they deserve, they are often overlooked because of their size, but any space is worthy of design! You may be considering a neutral palette or a simple refresh but your powder room can be so much more. Explore this Q & A to get some inspiration for your smallest space.

Q: What are some of the easiest ways to make this often-over-looked space attractive?

A: Adding a combination of colour and pattern is a great way to add some excitement to your powder room. A custom vanity with bold coloured cabinetry or a highly contrasting countertop can add the right amount of visual interest. Another way of adding excitement is through texture. Texture can be achieved through a textured tile, tile pattern, or wood cabinetry. This will make the space feel comfortable, while still having visual interest throughout. Lighting plays a huge role in adding some excitement. Since it is a small space, lighting levels affect how your materials & finishes appear.

Q: What colour palettes work best in a small space?

A combination of brighter and darker tones that are complimentary is best. Contrasting tones can create a more harmonized look and add variety to the space. However, there is always an opportunity for dark & moody or light & fresh. Any colour palette can be achieved through wall tiles, floor tiles, cabinetry, countertops, and even your bathroom hardware!

Q: Are there any new trends that are fun or functional to incorporate into a powder room?

A: There are plenty of new trends making their way into the design community. The first thing would be the different types of vanities. There have been many custom vanity styles, like floating vanities, that are a great space-saver while being easy to maintain because of the open floor space. A wall-mounted faucet also will save you some counter space and allow your faucet to become a focal point. Additionally, some visually interesting light fixtures have become very popular because they are functional, while having so many varieties and can act as a piece of artwork.

Q: What are some mistakes people make when designing a powder room?

A: The biggest mistake you can make when designing a powder room is overlooking its potential! There are several ways to create a special place in your home in each room. Don’t forget the ceiling, although it is often out of sight, it does not mean it should be an afterthought. Adding wood textures, interesting light fixtures, or fun patterned tile is a great way to ensure that each part of the space is unified. Don’t feel you need to keep a neutral palette or limit patterns, in small spaces you can get quite bold or creative with different patterns. Most of the time, it is likely guests that will be using the space, what a golden opportunity to incorporate your personality in this space.

Remember, don’t forget to have fun when designing your powder room. As it is a separate space, it does not have to flow with the rest of your home’s aesthetic. And, if you need some help, don’t hesitate to reach out to our design build team.
