The Main Floor Makeover – Love Your Home Again!

The main floor is most likely the reason you bought your house in the first place. Sure, you checked the number of bedrooms, if it had a garage and multiple bathrooms. You may have even considered the size of the ensuite bath in the primary bedroom, but the main floor layout was the thing that most likely tipped the scales on your home. The main floor is the area that gets the most use from the family. It has a Kitchen, Family room or a living room or both. There’s a dining room, front hall, maybe a back hall and in some cases, a laundry area. It’s a very busy floor! With all the traffic the main sees, it’s no wonder it’s the area that wears out the most quickly. And maybe it’s not worn out, but maybe people’s lifestyles have changed. The Kitchen you have used extensively over the past 15 + years has probably made you realize that there are better functional design and features available now that may not have been available or even invented when your kitchen was built. The living room was the place the family gathered to binge watch your favourite movies (your couch is also a likely candidate for replacement) and the dining room became your “remote office/conference room/eating area.”

With all the demands on the main floor space, homeowners also saw the opportunity to “improve” the functionality of the space. How do you do that? A new kitchen would be nice, sure, but what about opening the space to a more modern concept? Remove a wall between the kitchen and dining room, install elements that tie both spaces together, and you now have an expanded and enhanced gathering area for family and friends alike. What about the front “study” or “living room” that no one ever uses. Did I hear someone say, “HOME OFFICE”!? Yup, Home office. What a great idea!

Just because you bought the home the way it is, does not mean it has to remain that way for years to come. Homes can evolve with the needs of families, but it takes some creativity, time, and help from someone that has experience with the aesthetics and feasibility of it all. Oh, and someone to build it!

During the design-build process we not only think of how the family uses their home today but how it will “evolve” in the future. Any renovation worth doing is worth planning properly. The investment of time and attention to the projects requirements and details will be worth it for you, your family and your home.
